ISO 11783 FOUNDATION / PART 03

Data link
layer

Part 3 defines how ISO 11783 communication is organized for transfer over the shared CAN-based network, including a way to carry information that does not fit in one basic frame.

Turn a physical signal path
into structured transfer.

ISO 11783-3:2018 is titled Data link layer. The licensed reference used for this learning batch is the fourth edition, issued in 2018.

The ISO catalog now identifies that edition as withdrawn and replaced by ISO 11783-3:2026. This page is intentionally scoped to the 2018 reference and flags the edition boundary rather than blending requirements.

Devices need shared rules
for moving information.

A working cable only provides a signal path. Connected control functions also need consistent rules for identifying communication units, interpreting transfer context, and moving information larger than one basic network frame.

Part 3 provides that communication foundation. It lets higher application functions use a predictable transfer service without each feature inventing its own low-level exchange method.

Above the wire,
below machine meaning.

Part 3 uses the physical medium from Part 2 and supports network participation and application services above it.

Small frames, priorities,
addresses, and longer transfers.

FRAME

Basic transfer unit

Communication is carried in bounded network frames with information needed to interpret each exchange.

PDU

Communication context

A protocol data unit combines payload with context such as priority and the communicating parties.

TP

Multi-frame transport

Larger information is divided, coordinated, transferred, and reassembled through a shared transport method.

LOAD

Shared-medium behavior

Traffic priority, timing, retries, and competing communication affect whether the network remains usable.

Every connected ECU relies
on consistent transfer behavior.

A transport overview is not
a protocol implementation guide.

This page is not ISO 11783-3.Implementers need the licensed edition applicable to their product and must account for the 2026 replacement identified by ISO.

No frame or message lookup data is included.World Farm Tech omits bit layouts, identifiers, fields, state machines, timing values, tables, and normative procedures.

Successful packets do not prove application correctness.Data-link transfer can work while device identity, application semantics, compatibility, or machine behavior remains wrong.

The official ISO catalog entry establishes the 2018 publication identity, conceptual scope, and superseded status. This page contains no protocol tables or implementation parameters.
