A retired display, controller, gateway, sensor, tablet, camera or telematics unit may still hold field locations, credentials, configuration, wireless profiles, operator identities, customer records or access to cloud services. Secure decommissioning joins physical safety, asset custody, operational continuity, digital inventory, records retention, data disposition, vendor accounts and proof of closure. A factory reset button alone does not define that process.

NIST SP 800-88 Revision 2 frames media sanitization as an organizational program with decisions based on information sensitivity, appropriate techniques and validation. NIST's IoT catalog identifies device identity, configuration, data protection, logical access, software update and state awareness as connected capabilities.

Agricultural equipment adds mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, environmental, animal-welfare and seasonal consequences. Physical removal, data preservation, sanitization, transfer, disposal and recycling may require different competent authorities and cannot be inferred from a generic cyber checklist.
