The same north field can appear under a farm nickname, an FMIS key, a machine display label, a cadastral reference and a customer code. The same product, animal, implement or facility can acquire multiple identifiers over time. Identifier governance preserves which identity is authoritative for which purpose, how aliases and external keys map, and what happens when entities split, merge, transfer or retire.

GS1 describes a standards architecture that separates identifying real-world entities, capturing identity and sharing related data. These standards can support particular supply-chain contexts, but they do not replace farm-specific identity and stewardship decisions.
Master data governance begins with an entity and accountable owner, not a spreadsheet column. It records purpose, key authority, aliases, hierarchy, effective dates, relationships, source systems, corrections and retirement without embedding changing business facts inside the identifier itself.
