Indicators are clues
about soil functions.

NRCS explains that soil health cannot be measured directly or inferred from one outcome; indicators provide evidence about physical, chemical and biological properties and processes. NRCS research also emphasizes consistent, replicable and regionally relevant measurement.

An integrated assessment preserves each indicator's method, support area, sensitivity, limitations and context. A dashboard score may summarize a framework, but it should not erase the underlying values or become a universal diagnosis.
